41/365 Good Shoes means better Walking

This is not an advertisement for shoes. It is just an experience I had that I want to share. I walk on a daily basis. More in the recent one year than before. And the habit of listening to podcasts also helps in walking. That does not mean I don’t have days I don’t do it. In fact I did not walk today morning, Got late yesterday from a movie.. yes a movie in the theatre after so long… more on that tomorrow. more on walking also another day.. today let me talk of Shoes.

I have never been very particular about what shoes I wore… both brand and how it fit me… I would keep wearing the same shoes till someone notices that it is is all bad… I would buy a new one and still not throw the old one and sometime go back to wearing them.

I initially thought this might be because I loved those shoes so much and it was more comfortable. But I guess it was more of familiarity than comfort. Anyway I continued walking with these same shoes and last year I decided to go hike one day and I was slipping as there was so much gravel.

I went and bought me a pair… no 2 pair as it had some major discount. Hiking with them on was nice. But I took it a step further. I threw my old shoes and used one of the hiking shoes for my daily walk. And that hurt for some reason.

My daily walk is 5 miles which used to be in one stretch and now I do it as two sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening. Today I missed the morning and now since I do it two sessions, I will still do 2.5 miles in the afternoon.

So when you wear the hiking shoes and walk on concrete for 5 miles it really hurt, because the shoes are not light. But since I had invested on two shoes, I was hesitant to go and buy a third pair.

The pain got worse and then finally I went again and bought me a pair of light shoes that fit my feet very well. I cannot explain in words what difference that made to me. The pain subsided and I started becoming less conscious of dragging my feet with me. I even started jogging. apart of that stretch which felt good.

So the point is simple, if you think you are unable to walk well, do check the shoes you wear. I know it gets very complicated if you are like me. The only way is trying and walking and making sure it is light and fits you well. The idea is not having something that you will use for 20 years, but something that fits you well and does not hurt your feet in the long run.

I will leave you with a quote by Hippocrates “If you are in a bad mood, go for a walk. If you are still in a bad mood, go for another walk.”
