210/365 Do you Time box Your Day?

How many of us start a day with the plan and goal to complete our work in 8 hours. Don’t you think that there is a higher chance that we will finish it on time than when we just get to work without that thought.

This is a concept from agile and Scrum. If you are doing Scrum you know that you work on time boxed Sprints. You estimate what you can do in a Sprint, say 1 to 4 weeks and you have Sprint Goals and Definition of Done. You have a good sense of what you can do and what you cannot and your aim is to improve your team’s velocity by getting getter at what you do. You do retrospectives and you do continuous improvement.

What about your day or your week. Do you Time box it?. You very well know that if your estimate is not right your Sprints will overflow. Think how you plan your sprint, how many hours of work are you accounting for work.

If you do not Time box your day and if your work overflows beyond that 8 hour mark, then even if you are able to complete your sprints every time it might not be giving the right information.

Do you have a definition of Done for your Work day or Work week? Does planning for the next day include in your definition of day? How about clearing your inbox? How about ending the day on a positive note? How about taking 15 minutes at the end of the day to look at what you accomplished and note some corrective measures?

Be agile and enjoy your Work and don’t endure your overwork.
